In Part 1, I shared my top 10 Non Fiction books, some are physical, and others are digital.
Fiction is another beast. I hoard fiction. I devour fiction. So, I’ve broken my keeper fiction into a physical (Part 2) list and a digital (Part 3) list.
Without further ado, here’s my Top 10 fiction — sitting on a physical shelf:
- The Phantom of the Opera (Oh, come on, after this post, you knew that had to be on here!)
- Harry Potter Box Set (Books 1-7)
- Harper Hall Trilogy by Anne McCaffery (RIP)
I love the whole Pern series but this trilogy was my intro and remains near and dear to my reader heart.
- Karen Marie Moning (I have everything she’s ever written.)
- Melissa Mayhue’s Daughters of the Glen series
- Diana Gabaldon (I have the complete Outlander series and want to get the Lord John series.)
- Mary Stewart’s Arthurian series
- LaVyrle Spencer (Another author I have everything she’s written. I love her so much I’m actually working on replacing the few paperbacks I have with hard cover.)
- Timeline
- The Mists of Avalon (I never got into the rest of the series but love this one.)
Lots of romance because that’s my go-to genre. I can read it anytime, anywhere. And while I read all genres, I’m very much a mood reader.

I’m a total mood reader. I can read across genres, although lately I can’t get enough YA. Love it! I have so many books on my keeper shelf (physical and e-book) that I don’t know where to begin…
Raelyn Barclay said:
I know what you mean. It was so hard narrowing it down! And if you ask me again in a month, some of these will have changed, LOL
Thanks for stopping by Liz!

Dee Henderson’s O’Malley series, Francine Rivers’s Mark of the Lion trilogy (but only books 1 and 2), Laurie Anderson’s Speak, and a couple hard core Sci-Fi books I kept after taking a class on it. But then, my bookcase is rather small.
Raelyn Barclay said:
I have books in every room Angela, LOL. Though I am getting pickier about what stays. I’ll have to look into the ones you’ve mentioned.
Thanks for stopping by!

Some great choices there! I’m going to need to check out the Arthurian series – definitely something for my Amazon wishlist.
As for my own reading shelf:
Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro, And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the His Dark Materials series by Philip Pullman, Breakfast at Tiffany’s by Truman Capote, the Foundation Series and I, Robot by Isaac Asimov, A Separate Peace by John Knowles, The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness, and of course the Harry Potter series by You-Know-Who
Fun exercise! It’s neat because it’s a lot more varied than i would’ve expected, and also this list hasn’t really changed since I was a teenager. In fact, the only addition is The Knife of Never Letting Go, which I put on there because it’s such a wonderful example of strong first-person voice. Still…clearly, I need to read more.
Raelyn Barclay said:
I’ve read all of Agatha Christie, but I rarely re-read mysteries so they never stay on the shelf. To Kill a Mockingbird is around here somewhere too. I enjoyed the Foundation series, sadly those didn’t make it through the cull during our last move.
However, I see some I should check out on your list. Thanks for stopping by Annalise!

I also have the whole HP series along with Beetle the Bard.
I have the entire Outlander series, the Outlandish Companion and the Lord John series. My copy I The Scittish Prisoner should be in today. YAY! I also bought the graphic novel of Jamie’s side if the story.
My other keepers are the Black Stallion books by Walter Farley and the Anne of Green Gables series by LM Montgomery. Of course there are numerous romances from varied authors and my stack of Stephen King books. I have a TON of reading to catch up on!
Raelyn Barclay said:
We have the Beetle the Bard too. The Black Stallion series is what got me reading way back when 🙂 but they were all from the school library so never made it to my shelf. I’ve tried to get the wee beasties hooked so I’d have a reason to buy the whole series, sigh, no such luck.
Thanks for stopping by Melanie!

You haven’t read the Lord John books yet??? Scottish Prisoner came out today!
*happy dance*
Raelyn Barclay said:
I know! How remiss of me, LOL. I have them all sitting on my wish list. And I’ve been banned from buying for myself until after Christmas. Crossing fingers someone in the family is buying off the wish list this year 🙂
Thanks for stopping by Deniz!

i have three bookshelves, but the one in my living room has a ‘prominently displayed’ section. ahemmm. #nerdalert
Raelyn Barclay said:
What, like the entire collection of Dickens? Got it. Or, Shakespeare? Got that too. They look pretty on the shelf but I don’t read them all that much any more, LOL
Thanks for stopping by Gina!

I’m such a fiction nut so I don’t think I have anything on my shelf. However, with the fiction, I have Ender’s Game, The Chronicles of Narnia (all the stories in one huge book), The Hunger Games, The Clockwork Angel, Leviathan…hmmm…didn’t realize I had this much on my shelf. On my kindle app I have The Devil to Pay, Kindred and several others that just make me turn into a rabid reader.
Raelyn Barclay said:
The digital fiction is a whole other post, LOL. Oh yeah, Narnia is definitely on the keeper shelf too. There’s just no way for me to create a true Top 10 List. I could create a different one based on which room I’m in at the time!
The Clockwork Angel is on my TBR list, along with the Hunger Games. I’ll have to check out Leviathan 🙂
Thanks for stopping by Angela!

Correction: I meant that I don’t have any nonfiction on my shelf. sorry 😦
Raelyn Barclay said:
LOL, I figured that’s what you meant.

There are so many books that I admire and often go back to, that it would take me a long time to list. I definitely love YA, adult short stories and adult fiction, but I also often read nonfiction since I am such a sucker for knowledge 🙂 I own a lot of “printed” books but, lately, I gravitate more toward the digital form.
Raelyn Barclay said:
I’m moving more toward digital too, hence the reason I have a part 3: digital fiction post just around the corner 🙂
Thanks for stopping by Angela!

I keep very little fiction on my shelves. I’ll keep them for a few years, but I almost always donate them to women’s shelters after a while. I do keep books that were signed for me by authors though, but that’s mostly for sentimental reasons.
Since I don’t reread fiction, it seems impractical to keep them. Nonfiction is different. I’ve kept every book I’ve ever bought and most are hardbacks.
Raelyn Barclay said:
I don’t re-read a lot, which is why my fiction shelves are getting thinner, but when I do it’s like visiting an old friend 🙂
Thanks for stopping by Maria!

Ooooh, you’ve got a great list! I’ve also got Gabaldon’s Outlander series and everything by KMM (well, I am currently holding onto the Fever series from the library for dear life, until I can buy my own set for Christmas). My other favs include: Jacqueline Carey’s Kushiel series (the first 6 books; I haven’t read the Naamah books yet), GRRM’s Song of Ice and Fire series, everything by Jane Austen, Jane Eyre, Possession by A.S. Byatt, and almost everything I read in high school (Tale of Two Cities, The Scarlet Letter, The Joy Luck Club, The Great Gatsby…).
Can’t wait to see your digital shelf!
Raelyn Barclay said:
I have GRRM’s stuff on the old TBR list, I’ve had so many people recommend them. I could do a classics list, LOL, though admittedly I don’t read them as much as I used to.
Thanks for stopping by Lena!

Great list. I’m still hoping to read some Karen and Diane this year. My BFF raves about their books.
Raelyn Barclay said:
You definitely have to find the time to read them, Ciara. Gabaldon’s are long but well worth the time.
Thanks for stopping by!

YAY for Highlanders! I also love Elizabeth Hoyt, J.R. Ward, Gena Showalter, Richele Mead’s Succubus series, Cassandra Clare, Janet Evanovich and Lisa Kleypas. And those are just when the romance mood strikes. I’ve also got Stephen King, Neil Gaiman and too many others.
Raelyn Barclay said:
Yeah, I have a soft spot for those Highlanders 🙂 You’ve got some great ones there! I havent’ heard of Richele Mead’s series, I’ll have to check that out.
Thanks for stopping by Julie!
Nadja Notariani said:
Love your shelf! Mine changes, too! And I’m totally a mood reader. I’ll have to check out the Scottish Prisoner that Deniz mentioned up further…I ❤ Highlanders….and your Daughters of the Glen series. I'll write up a list for my girls to shop on Kindle for me this year….ha ha.
Raelyn Barclay said:
LOL, yeah, I keep an active wish list on Amazon. I’m really crossing fingers my guys will actually buy off it!

Yay for Diana Gabaldon!
But you left out Tolkien 🙂
Raelyn Barclay said:
Not to worry Deniz…Tolkien is there, but EVERYONE mentions Tolkien, LOL
deniz said:
Well that’s true… but I meant everything he’s ever written, not just LOTR 🙂
Raelyn Barclay said:
I’ve read more than just LOTR, etc. but I’m sure I haven’t scratched the surface of his body of work. However, LOTR is the only thing on my shelf, everything else was read via the library 😀
deniz said:
I’m going to try rereading the 12 books of the History of Middle Earth in 2012, for the first time. I love the Notion Club Papers!
Raelyn Barclay said:
That sounds like a great challenge Deniz! Of course all this talk has me needing to check out what I have and haven’t read 🙂
