Sunday Summary & #ROW80

  1. Oh where, oh where, has the time gone? Right. Wee beasties were out of school for two days this last week.
  2. Then Friday was a wasted day with repair people in and out. Really, from 11:30 am to 7:30 pm! Poor Roxy got way too much sun as I needed to keep her outside much of the day. Do they make sunscreen for dogs?
  3. The writing: still working my way through notes from betas, revamping the MC, solidifying the SF elements, and nailing down conflict. It’s very doubtful this will be ready for the sub call. But I’m okay with that. The sub call pushed some limits. The betas pushed craft. I’m learning and growing so it is all good. I want to keep pushing those deadlines and limits so I’m continuing to work on this as if I’m going to submit it for the call.
  4. I have a love/hate relationship with deadlines and August McLaughlin had a great post, Deadlines: Lifelines for Writers. How are you with deadlines?
  5. The blogging: still holding to a week cushion by the skin of my teeth. Seriously, can there be an odder saying?
  6. I loved Roni Loren’s Author Websites: Layering Yours with Sticky Extras post. What makes you return to a website or blog?
  7. The social media: still failing miserably with commenting and taking part on the different sites. However, I AM getting around to them all every day without killing myself. I have no idea what switched and that is my social media goal for this week. Once I have that figured, get the commenting back up to par.
  8. And of course, Marcia Richards had to go point out 16 Reasons Pinterest is Worth Your Time. Evil Brilliant.
  9. The health: I am back on the wagon completely with the water and slowly working in those dog walks. The Beastie Girl and I got out twice this last week. Additionally, for March I’m cutting out some of the extra sugars. I started implementing that by substituting Truvia for sugar in my morning coffee. My goal is to slowly reduce the Truvia until I’m down to just taking cream in said morning coffee. I’m such a tea person, LOL.
  10. Angela Wallace really hit the nail on the head with her Squeezing Time post!
  11. The reading: yep, been doing some of that too. Sloan Parker highlighted a number of free reads Don’t Read in the Closet Collections that can be download from Goodreads. A little M/M romance in the evening :)

Dream Cars & Date Night

The Dream Car…

Back in January, when the parental units were visiting, we went up to Imperial Palace to the Auto Collections. Le Sigh. I found the perfect car…

'62 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster

A two-seat Date Night car…

With my perfect license plate…

Is this me or what?

Laugh all you want, That Man did. He says the new leather sofa has more play room. He may have a point ;)

The Specifics

I really want this beauty. Maybe I can take up a collection :D

That Man just doesn’t appreciate a sweet ride. If it gets him from point A to point B he’s a happy camper.

Am I alone? Any other car enthusiasts out there?

The Date Night…

We finally had one! Gasp and shock. January is That Man’s busiest month of the year. The “don’t know if you’re coming or going” kind of busy.

If you’re here in Vegas, I highly recommend Bootlegger Bistro on the south end of the Strip. It is the only restaurant worthy of braving the Strip on a Friday night!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Sunday Summary & #ROW80

  1. The writing: I’ve revised. I’ve searched and destroyed (though I’ll need to do at least one more of these). I’ve fiddled. I’ve deleted. I’ve moved. I’ve tweaked. I’ve revised again. OY! Yesterday, I sent the MS to the ol’ e-reader, read through it, and made notes. Hoping I’ve finally cut it down to where it needs to be for the sub call but as of typing up this post I haven’t had a chance to implement the notes.
  2. I’d love to get at least one more beta reader. This is a SFR, 1st person POV, sitting at 36K as of typing this post (needs to be under 35K for the call). If you’re interested please drop me an email to BuriedNWords [at] gmail [dot] com. Thanks!
  3. The blogging: still maintaining that week’s worth of cushion.
  4. The social media: sorry folks. Number one on the ol’ list has been monopolizing my time. Hope to catch up soon.
  5. That evil brilliant Jenny Hansen convinced me to join Triberr. (Be sure to check out Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4 because Jenny is a master at navigating the techie waters.) I’ll probably start a Tarot Tribe once I’m more comfortable with the site :)
  6. Last year Jennifer Probst talked about the importance of joining Goodreads.
  7. Yeah, guess what I did? :head desk:
  8. The health: epic fail. Sigh.
  9. Must find balance…

An Interview with Keri Lake

I’m not sure when I first stumbled upon Keri Lake but her Halos world intrigued me. It is my great pleasure to have her here today!

Please help me in welcoming Keri Lake…

Welcome Keri.

Let’s start with something fun. If you could have a quiet dinner with any writer, living or dead, who would you choose?

I’d actually like to have dinner with JK Rowling. I don’t know why, but I am so intrigued by her personal story, that I think it would make for very interesting conversation.

Oh, good one. I agree, her personal journey is amazing. Like most writers, I started on this journey as an avid reader. What is your go-to genre to read?

My go-to genre is paranormal romance. Werewolves, shifters, fae, vampires and of course demons and fallen angels. I’m not picky!

With my Scots ancestry, I’m definitely partial to the fae :) So it was a short jump for you to write a paranormal romance. I’m curious about the rules you created for the Halos world. Was it more of a discovery process or did you work out the boundaries before ever writing a word?

Well, a little of both. I had to have some boundaries set for the storyline, to add some tension and contribute to the plot, but a lot of it evolved along with the story.

HALOS: Somnium your debut — What is your writing process? What elements do you tackle first and how long from inspiration to completed work?

Oh man, I wish I could tell you that I had a writing process because that would make me sound very organized. In truth, aside from a few note cards I use to jot some ideas, I pretty much just dive into writing. The moment I sit and outline, I end up spinning my wheels in mud. The story unfolds as soon as my fingers hit the keyboard. And oddly enough, I’ve never hit writer’s block. I have this unfailing faith that the story will just come to me.

What is your best or favorite setting for writing? Music on, yay or nay? Time?

My favorite setting for writing is probably not the best setting. I’d prefer to write on my laptop in bed. But often it’s way too tempting to fall asleep. Between the music, the cozy blankets, warm coffee and the peaceful surroundings, I’d be inclined to drift off. Definitely yay on music. I cannot write without my playlist. In fact, you’ll find some of my favorite songs that I use to write on my website. The best time for me to write is ungodly. I will wake up as early as three in the morning to plot away.

Yeah, I get up for Dark & Early writing too, otherwise the time gets lost in the daily grind. But three am, that is ungodly! Or dedication!

What is your favorite line or moment from Somnium?

Oooh!! Tough one. I love the scene with the motorcycle. But I think my all-time favorite would have to be when Allie wakes to Colton playing guitar. I imagine that to be one of the most serene (and inviting, *cough*) moments in the book.

Oh, yeah. Love that scene :D

How did you come up with the title and what exactly is somnium?

There are a few Latin themes throughout the story, including the script tattoo on the cover. The title of the book means ‘dream’ in Latin. And the MC, Allie, is plagued by dreams and nightmares that she doesn’t understand.

Yes, that cover is delicious. What went into the cover design?

My brother actually designed the cover for me. I wanted something dark that of course, gave some insight into the story. I was very pleased with the end result. The tattoo was designed by a tattoo artist and I sought out a Latin expert for the script, ‘In Morte Reconciliatio.’

Fans of Karen Maria Moning’s Fever series have gotten tattoos based ones mentioned in the books. It’ll be fun to see if the same happens with yours.

If your book were made into a movie, who do you picture playing each character? I’m especially curious about Colton ;)

Hmmmm. You know, it’s hard to say who would play the characters in my story! I’ve pretty much made them up in my head. I actually have some character pics on my website that have the look I was going for. But I’m not sure who they’d be as actors, quite honestly. I’d be more curious to know who my readers think would play these characters ;)

Good point, and it could open up an interesting debate. Have you read Somnium, dear blog visitors? If so, please share in the comments who YOU think should play each character.

What was the most challenging aspect of writing this book?

The most challenging aspect of writing the book was finding the time to write it. Working full-time and ‘being there’ for my family proved to be tricky at times. I became very efficient with the few minutes I could steal here and there. It’s amazing how focused you can become when you’re faced with limitations.

I can completely relate, LOL. For those who haven’t read this yet, your heroine, Allie, is an engineer. Why did you choose this profession and how did you prepare to write about it?

Allie is actually based on my sister, who is an engineer. So preparing to write her character was simply a matter of sitting down with my sister to discuss her job; easier said than done, considering she moved out of state. But I wrangled some of her time and Allie’s character came to life.

You’ve mentioned on your site that you’re at work on the next story in the HALOS world. Can you share a little of it with us?

Requiem will pick up where Somnium left off. Readers were faced with a number of mysteries yet unrevealed by the end of Somnium. Book two will begin to unravel some of those mysteries. It continues with Allie as the MC. But I’ll be introducing new characters into the mix.

What was the most surprising thing you learned during Somnium?

The most surprising thing I learned was that my pacing was really off. In fact, I had to rewrite the first chapter a couple of times to get it right. I’ve been told that I have a poetic style, very descriptive. This is nice in poetry, but in a full-length novel, it can affect the pace of the story and be a bit…boring. So to practice brevity, I took writing breaks and wrote some flash. This helped tremendously and when I returned to Chapter 1, I felt that the pace was greatly improved.

I’ve never been much of a flash fiction writer so it is interesting that it helped with pacing, I’ll file that away for future reference. What writing advice are you glad you followed or ignored?

The writing advice I’m glad that I followed is learning to take criticism for my work. Develop tough skin. Everything comes down to people’s preferences. What might not be interesting to one person could be intriguing to someone else. As writers, I think we become very attached to our work and often, defensive as if someone just called our child ugly. We have to be open to the idea that there are going to be many people in the world who just aren’t into our story, and some people who absolutely love it. The trick is to write for yourself and what you love.

Great advice!

Since we’re all readers at heart let’s wrap up with a couple more reading questions. What was your favorite childhood, I’m thinking middle school or younger, book?

Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein.

Love Silverstein. Still read his books to the wee beasties. Because my reading list isn’t long enough *snort* what are you currently reading?

I’m just finishing up Pleasure Unbound by Larissa Ione and have begun reading Lover Eternal by J.R. Ward.

Oh, Larissa Ione is one of my go-to authors! Haven’t started Ward’s series yet but it’s on the ol’ list, LOL. And for fun, what do you think readers would be shocked to discover about you?

I think readers would be shocked to know that I am obsessed with sharks. I’ve always loved them. Seriously, Shark Week is like a holiday for me – I look forward to it every year!

Wrap-Up Quickies:

Dog or cat lover? Dog lover
Tea or Coffee? Coffee, but I am addicted to Peppermint Mochas.
Quiet or music when you read? When I read, I definitely need quiet.
E-books or paper? Much as I love my Kindle, cracking a new spine is the best.
Where can readers find you?

Thanks again, Keri, for being here today!

Bio: Keri Lake is a married mother of two living in Michigan. She writes fiction in the genres of paranormal romance, urban fantasy and recently finished book 1 of a paranormal YA series. A graduate of Michigan State University (go green!), Keri holds 2 degrees in science but would gladly trade them both to pursue her true passion for writing. Though novels tend to be her focus, she has also written countless short stories and flash fiction whenever the distraction arises. She completed her very first novel in 2008 and has written two more since then with a few in the works.

When she isn’t toiling away on plots and protagonists, she enjoys reading, music and travel. If she could create mystical powers for herself, she’d have the ability to flash to anywhere in the world. And if she could flash to anywhere in the world at this very moment, she’d be staring at the ocean from her Adirondack chair on the shores of North Carolina.

A work assignment in Kittery, Maine should be routine for Allie Lynch; nothing more than to prove herself as a brilliant engineer. Instead she finds herself torn between two men: a gorgeous military guard, Colton Briggs, and her devilishly handsome colleague, Drew Costa. To resist temptation, Allie does the only thing she can: she throws herself into her work.

But fate has other plans for Allie. Women are going missing all around her, Allie is struck with a series of life-threatening mishaps, and she becomes the obsession of a local deranged psychopath.

Thrust into a dark world that she can hardly fathom, Allie must fight for her very survival, open her mind to new realities – and open her heart to the possibility of love. Because both of these men are trouble – but one is a greater danger than she could ever imagine…

So mark your calendars for December 3rd and share the love of bookstores with a child.

Romance

One reason I read (and write) romance is that no matter what the couple go through I’m guaranteed a happily-ever-after (or at least a happily-right-now).

  • Love at first sight.

I’d like to think it possible though I’m not sure I believe in it. The thought is toe-curling romantic to me. Now, lust at first sight. Oh yeah.

  • Soul-mates.

Again, I’d like to think it possible. That someone out there completes you, connecting with you on all levels. Romantic sigh.

  • A second chance at love.

That I believe in. That I live.

Claddagh: Let Love and Friendhsip Reign Forever

Fifteen — well, fifteen and a half — years ago, That Man proposed to me, standing in the kitchen of our first home on the day we received the keys. Our romance has had the ups and downs, and times when the conflict seemed overwhelming, you’d expect from a romance novel. And I’m still crazy in love with him.

Last week I mentioned Samhain as part of my Sunday Summary which is considered the Celtic New Year. Out with the old, in with the new. Could there be a better time to embark on a new life together? This month marks fourteen years. Happy anniversary honey!

For me, romance is in the little things; a touch, a look, a whisper. Butterflies from a shared look. I’m a chocoholic, is it any wonder that I get lost in My Guy’s dark chocolate colored eyes? Contentment in resting your head on his chest, right over his heart with its reassuring beat. A sense of coming home when your special someone embraces you. Then there’s the cadence of his voice. It is the sweetest music to my ears. And how about the spark that tickles across your skin when you touch after an absence.

Yesterday, Natalie Hartford talked about Marking Special Anniversaries. November is a great month for anniversaries :) As I said in my comment on her post, My Guy and I celebrate the “just because” days more than the big dates. But in the end…

Romance is all about being mindful of how lucky you are to have found each other.

Romance is about falling in love a little bit more each day. A cute take on that is the movie 50 First Dates with Drew Berrymore and Adam Sandler. For those of you who haven’t seen it, Sandler’s character needs to get Berrymore’s character, who suffers from short-term memory loss, to fall in love with him each day. Is there anything more romantic than your special someone making you fall in love with them all over again?

What does Romance mean to you? Do you and your honey celebrate the Hallmark days or the “just because” days?

*For more on the ring and the hidden meanings on how to wear it check out the Claddagh Story.

Scottish Romance

There’s something about Scotland that just screams romance to me. And I can’t be the only one. Have you seen the number of scantily clad kilted men gracing the covers in your local bookstore lately? Yum. It’s not just historical or time-travel anymore, we’ve got paranormal and fantasy too. One day I’d like to write a Scottish romance. Whether setting it in Scotland or just having Scottish characters. Is it the land, or the people, or the accent? (They think ours is delightful I’m told.) I just get a tug for all things Scottish, and I don’t think it’s the ancestry.

I used to be a contributing member of my local Highland Games association before kids and the day-to-day overwhelmed me, a move out of state didn’t help either. Watch rippling muscle on the athletics as they fight to balance a telephone pole then toss the thing so it lands at 12 o’clock to the competitor’s 6 o’clock — true sport, it’s called a Caber Toss — and tell me you don’t find a Scottish man sexy. Or, a bonnie lass kicking up her heels dancing a Highland Reel to the bagpipes.

Aw, the bagpipes. Y’all can call me crazy but bagpipes are haunting and beautiful. To hear Amazing Grace played at sunset on a boardwalk will bring tears to your eyes whether you are religious or not, Christian or not. And what’s more romantic than walking arm in arm with the one who makes your heart sing at sunset, on a boardwalk?

Kilt, n. – a costume sometimes worn by Scotsmen in America and Americans in Scotland. ~Ambrose Bierce

The land. Sigh. The land is magical. I have no idea how a country roughly the size of the state of Oregon but with three times the population can retain such an untamed quality. It’s ancient. It has a presence of its own. And I haven’t even stepped foot on it yet. I will one day. Wonder if I can talk That Man into a trip :taps finger against chin: After all, I could claim the trip was for research. It would be a tax write off, right?

I’d love to hear what land or people scream romance to you?
